Ordering Krax to kill Ada, Markoff tells Altman that he will become the founder of the Church of Unitology, after which Markoff had Krax killed when he deemed him "expendable". Forcing Altman to continue regardless of the danger the Marker posed, Markoff leaves everyone inside the facility to die when Necromorphs attacked, solely so he could record video footage of how the Necromorphs and the Marker operate. Breaking into Michael Altman's house to torture information out of him about the Marker, Markoff forced Altman, his girlfriend Ada, and Altman's coworkers to retrieve the Marker, which led to several of Markoff's employees killing themselves or losing their minds due to the Marker's influence on them.

Plus, over time the government's own creation would be its downfall as the Unitologists would continually try to trigger Convergence. Ironically, this also allowed the Church to be able to open its arms to anyone with a passing grudge against the government, allowing them to commit horrible terror attacks with ease and at short notice. Now Unitologists believe their savior was assassinated after his big proclamation at Washington DC and that the EarthGov should never be trusted. This allowed them to be formed into a malleable, dogmatic structure over the next 300 years as the true events were warped and misled until they turned into something completely different. As well as solidify the Unitologists under a Martyr figurehead.
In the end, the death of Michael Altman was a plan enacted by the EarthGov military to cover up their attempts to weaponize the Markers effects.
